This is my final so it has to be good - Essay Example However, the major challenge was on how to put down this information in written form so as to communicate it to the intended readers. I always found myself making several drafts before giving a final paper. This made me spend a lot of time to come up with a piece of writing that effectively communicated what was intended. One of my major challenges at the beginning of the course was grammar. Being an international student, I did not have adequate knowledge on grammar rules in English. Particularly, tenses were very difficult to understand. Because different words have different ways of how to change their tenses, I always found myself making mistakes. I mixed different tenses in my writings which confused readers. Additionally, determining the right preposition to use in different situations was difficult. It was difficult to determine when to use by, on and in. Even more challenging was using these prepositions to correctly come up with phrasal verbs. From this course, I learned that passive sentences are used in academic writing. I had difficulties changing active sentences into passive sentences. Wrongfully mixing active and passive sentences in my writing made me fail in academic writing. Secondly, ensuring coherence in writing was a challenge. It was difficult to connect sentences and even words together to come up with an appropriate text. I learned about conjunctions and how they are used for this function. Each of the conjunctions learned have different purposes and can only be used for the specific purposes that they should meet. Some like and, also and additionally are used to show addition while others like however and but show that the argument is opposing what was stated earlier (Gangal 53). Selecting which conjunction to use in a given context was challenging at times, especially when they were to be placed at the beginning of the sentence.
